Why isn't saliva used instead of blood for lab tests? Since everyone's saliva contains tiny amounts of their blood, why can't a saliva sample be used instead of having to use a hypodermic needle to draw blood for a test? It would be a lot less invasive, and easier, to use a swab to get some saliva. Isn't technology sophisticated enough (yet) to detect the blood in the saliva?

What is checked in the average blood test/lab work? I thought it was my medicine making me sick so today I asked my psychiatrist and he told me he doesn't think it is because if it were, I would have been sick since day one of taking them instead of just the past 3 weeks. He agreed with the nurse to do lab work on me which I am assuming is drawing blood and testing it. What can they learn from blood work though? Can it check for liver problems? When having a fasting lab blood test, why do they tell you to avoid fatty and greasy foods in your last meal? The directions say to avoid fatty, creamy, oily, fried, gravy, or whole milk & that kind of food during the final meal, 12 hours before the blood test. I understand why you need to fast after that, but what's the reason for not eating fatty foods pre-fast?
Received $500 bill from lab for blood tests done 5 months ago? I had two blood tests done in June and last week I received a $500 bill from the lab. I called the insurance to dispute the charges and they told me that the lab had turned in the claim with the incorrect order of my name, middle name first, last name as middle and first name as last. I called the lab about the error and they confirmed my name was correct, just like it showed up on my bill. Both sides claimed the other party was at fault. What should I do? Should I go ahead and pay the bill because the account is long overdue? Or will it ruin my credit history if I wait for this problem to be corrected? This is my first time having my own health insurance and I am not sure what to do.

Does weed show up in normal lab work blood tests? I smoked weed for the first time about 2 or 3 weeks ago, I only got a little buzzed for about an hour. a couple days ago i went to the park after school, and was just skating, but everyone was smoking pot and inhaled a lot of it. Tomorrow i have to do lab work and get my blood taken. I'm scared the weed is going to come up on the test results. Will it show up on the results from the 3 weeks ago i did it and does Inhaling pot also mean it could come up on tests? because if it does come up i want to have the slightly true excuse that "i inhaled a bunch when i was skating at the park". I don't think they will be looking for drugs, its more of to test my cholesterol and all that other stuff just like routine stuff you do once a year. but does thc in the blood come up regardless?

Can not fasting cause errors in blood tests? I just got a letter from my doctor at Veterans Affairs saying a blood lab test I recently took showed levels far above normal in my liver tests. The levels they referred to were my AST and ALT. I've done a little checking online and now I'm pretty nervous that I have some serious liver problem and I'm sorta freaking out a bit. I feel completely fine and haven't had any pain in the area. I'm only 32 years old. So I'm wondering if it was a bad test. I wasn't made aware of the testing so I had eaten a large bowl of cereal just an hour or two before the test. I've done the test before and they usually require a 12 hour fast. So could the fact that I had just eaten a large bowl of sweet cereal caused an error? I'm going in tomorrow to get checked but was hoping someone might be able to shed some light on this for me. Thank you!

Are diabetic blood tests that test your 3 month blood sugars accurate? I have type 2 diabetes... been diagnosed for about a year now. My doctor just checked mine because my monitor has been telling me that my sugars have been consistantly in the 140's. In the morning I'm lucky if they are in the 120's. Usually the morning check is in the 130's. He changed my montitor to one that you can check the accuracy, I did that and it still shows the higher levels. I'm not on any medications. I was hoping he would put me on glucaphage or something like that. I'm eating right, excercising 6 times a week, etc. My doc did the blood test at a lab that checks your blood sugars for the past 3 months and he said they were good and for me to keep a log of my testing at home and see him in 4 weeks.
Blood tests: anyone knows a lab that will do all blood tests without prescription here in denver colorado?? It is of life or death. I went for pre-surgery lab tests & my blood sugar was 31. I had no symptoms.? My half-brother developed Type 2 diabetes when he was 37. It turned into Type 1 diabetes within a couple of years and now he is insulin dependent. I am 37, healthy and in good shape. Should I be worried? No, this was not a fasting test. I had drank about 8 ounces of my coconut mocha before my test. This is what is so alarming to me. My nuerosurgeon was immediately notified of my results, but the hospital called me to make sure I drank some juice quickly. How could my blood sugar be so low and I had absolutely no symptoms??? Not sure this was a lab error. The nurse called me within an hour after drawing the blood. So, who knows? I have been feeling cruddy the last couple of weeks, but I have attributed it to my back. I had back surgery in May and my back never fused, so I have to have back surgery again on Friday! :(

Lab tests, what does decreased MCHC and increased RDW could mean, if anything else is perfectly in order? My friend got his urine and CBC (blood) lab tests (he doesn't feel well these days)...everything on it in the boundaries of normal results (as specified on the list), except MCHC (decreased a bit) and RDW (increased). Earlier in his life he suffered from anemia, but this didn't show on his regular tests for years. Late few weeks he feel "down" with his health a bit and so, this tests were done, by doctor's advice. Anyway, he has appointment with his doctor friday afternoon, but as he's a bit nervous type, this worries him... Can anyone tell us what should we be prepared for (I looked online tests for hours, but beside general explanations, no clue)? I repeat, EVERYTHING else looks perfect, in the boundries listed on the test paper...all points of urine and CBC, glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol normal...everything on the list, as he did the full tests. Please, if anyone could tell us, you would spare one nice person of much worry in the next two days. He just need "a guide" to hang onto until doctor visit, no drugs or any other advices what to do about whatever he has. And if you could explain in plain english, that would be perfect. Thanks to anyone who tries to help in advance, we both appreciate it very much :)

Feline Hemotropic Mycoplasmosis- what blood test lab values (if any) will be abnormal? Took my cat to the vet due to sudden onset of lethargy and lack of appetite (From fine to sickly in 3 days). He is 1 1/2 years old. Blood tests revealed an extremely low RBC count. He tested negative for feline aids and feline leukemia, and WBC counts were not elevated. This vet wanted to euthanize my cat, so to be sure I got a second opinion. The next vet more or less agreed with the first, however sent us home with appetite stimulant, antibiotics, and steroids, in addition to giving a shot of B12, and told us it was a wait and see approach. Could there be any undetectable causes (like the one mentioned above), and is a blood transfusion in order? Thanks in advance.

Recovering From Anorexia: Are Blood Tests and urine tests Accurate? And a question about Re-feeding syndrome..? I restricted severly and exercised continously for almost three months. This month I decided I didn't want that and I'm trying to recover. Lab tests of blood showed levels of minerals are in normal range. But is that accurate? Or are the body's storage of stuff like calcium and all that not reflected in the blood test? My second question is related. I've been having edema and water retention (I have no history of either, and after starting eating again the tests show that I have water trapped in the empty space in my pelvic area)I have been to the doctor on sunday of this week, and I'm taking a multi-vitamin and minerals supplement that he gave me and a water pill too. I'm supposed to see him again in another week. I'm not from a first world country and stuff like anorexia and all that are not very understood, that's why I have been researching the net all day and I read about the re-feeding syndrome, and that symptoms of it are the water retention and edema. I have been eating every hour to half an hour as the doctor recommended, but I know that I'm eating too much (two fibre rich buiscits that are are equal to 400 calories, for example, then a large quantitiy of almonds, or two bowls of rice). The last two days I've been having some moderate edema and I've been eating alot of carbohydrates and sweets and salts and drank more water than usual (I didn't drink alot because I thought that the water was causing the edema). Anyway, I feel lost and I don't know what to do. I read that the solution to the refeeding syndrome is to gradually increase caloric intake. I don't know how many calories to start with, especially that I have to take my medicine twice a day after meals. I also want to know which kinds of food to eat. And how can I gain weight (I don't know what my weight is because of the water retention and loose skin but I know that the very last weight I reached in these four months was 88 pounds, and I suspect even less. My height is 5 feet 0 inches.) if I'm not eating alot of calories? Should I just go on eating and bear with my edema or should I mind the "re-feeding syndrome"? It could cause death and I'm really stressed about everything, especially since no one understands what's going on with me. I'm really feeling stupid and hating myself for causing my body so much torment. Help?

These are supposed to be the "abnormal" values. Re: nana4141 Thank you for those info. I have read them already, but is it possible to have someone to explain more to me please? Why does my blood sugar jump when I go in for lab work? It averages 100-120 every day except when I go in for a fasting blood test. Even if it's only 120 when I leave the house, when I get to the lab it's always 165! Supposedly the battery of medications I'm taking keeps my sugar from going up on its own, and at home that seems to be true. But if I go to a lab, it spikes! And it's not the lab--it reads the same when I get back home. Are the meds sugar-coated for some reason?
Need help in differentiating between Klebsiella pneumoniae and Shigella sonnei via lab tests? I've been researching these two bacteria for a while yet they are SO similar in many characteristics that I can't find a test that would help to differentiate between them. Also, my lab does not have access to Blood-Agar so hemolytic activity cannot be a factor in differentiating them. Thank you
Do regular blood tests show if a person is HIV positive? I was in the hospital and they took a lot of my blood and put it through the lab so I think that this means if I have HIV they would have seen it when they were testing my blood for other things(I dont know what tests they were doing but they took a lot of my blood in different tubes or whatever you call them). If you are a doctor can you help me?
blood test in lab???????? ok tomorrow i have a blood test in a lab to see if i have cholestrol or not and im really panicking because i dont know what they're guna do to me there and i dont know how long it will take and im also really panicing because isnt it possible to capture aids while doing blood work??
Only 1 drp of blood is requird for blood-tests, then why do they take so much of blood at labs for the purpos? Every time you go to a lab for any blood test, they take too much of blood out of your body, but only one or a few drops are required for testing purposes! Then why do they take that much of blood? Where does it go?
how much would a blood test cost for my 80 pound lab? my vet suggest slentrol for her but they would need to do a blood test to find out if she had any heritary problems and how much does slentrol cost i heard 1-2 dollars per day
If a ordinary blood testing lab gives report as "Azoospermia", what does it mean? Is it total absence of sperms or low/poor measurable sperm count needed for pregnancy.
In a routine blood test, is it likely (or even possible) for the lab to detect drug usage? I have to get bloodwork done soon to check my thyroid function and fun stuff like that. I have no history of being caught with drugs or anything, so there is no reason anyone would drug test me. However, is there a chance the lab people would notice the THC or whatever in my system without actually testing for it? Or is there any chance they would test it for some reason anyway? I'm doubting it, just making sure.
how accurate is the blood test for Hepatitis B and C? Original Blood sample was taken on 20.11.2006 by the Lab. Tests were done for LFT's and ALt was 62. I went to collect the report on 5.12.2006. Doctor then ordered Additional tests for Hep Bs Antigen, Hep B s Antibody and Hep C Antigen. The results were all conclusive and negative. I am just concerned that since they tested the same old blood specimen taken on 20.11.2006, ie around 15 days old, the antibodies and antigen might have vanished from the blood specimen. Does this ever happen?
