How reliable are liver blood tests? Several years ago I was diagnosed with fatty liver. I lost 50 pounds but was having abdominal pain so I had a liver blood test done which came out normal. However, I am still having abdominal pain. Is there any possibility that the liver test could be wrong?
Which condition requires a pill every night and monthly blood liver tests? Which condition (subject is female, 19) which would require a monthly blood liver test (which I believe checks for enzymes/AST) and also requires a pill every night (usually around dinner) around the same time? Apparently the pill is "okay" to take with alcohol. I know it's kind of vague and it could mean a lot of things. All help is appreciated! Thanks!
Would imminent alcoholic liver failure show up in blood tests? I recently had a full series of blood tests including liver function tests, and all proved negative with 'callback' required with the doctor. If I had any serious or emerging liver problems caused by alcohol, would anything have shown up in these tests? I'm 56, used to definitely drink a bit too much, but now drink two or three bottles of real ale on four nights of the week...

anyone ever have experience with high liver counts in blood tests? i take milk thistle and omega 3 fish oil hoping my liver counts will be good. i was told last year my levels were elevated. had colonospohy test. had a polyp, was fine and was told all seemed fine. now dr. wants to do another blood test this year.

Does alcohol effect a liver blood test? I am on Accutane and have to take monthly blood tests to watch my liver. If i consume alcohol (say 5 drinks) then take one of my blood tests a week later, will there be any effect on the test? Thanks.
What could be the cause of these high liver blood tests? Hi. I was in the emergency department the other night with severe abdominal and chest pain, and anyways they sent me home after nearly 5 hours because the pain had began to go away. There, the doc told me my liver function tests had come back and they were, to quote him "really bad". So I got a copy of the results sent to me from my doctors office, and while most were just under the highest point for their specific ranges, there were three that were quite high. I was just wondering if anyone might have any idea why this could be? The high results: GGT 145 U/L ( < 51 ) ALT 276 U/L ( < 8 - 31 ) AST 381 U/L ( < 40 ) Also done were some white blood cell count tests, and the WBC (11.9 x 10e9/L) and Neutrophils (10.2 x 10e9/L) were slightly high. My MCH levels were also slightly low (26.7 pg, compared to between 27-33 that they should be). Also, I have lost over 70lbs in the last 10 months, for reasons unknown. Could this be related? Thanks for any and all help here :) Hi, thanks for your reply :) The doctor suspected gall stones, but when he did an ultrasound there was none, and he said it didn't like there was any inflammation of my gallbladder or my bile duct (he had a very perplexed look and tone when he said it). I think I'll definitely do a follow up with my GP, unfortunately he's away for another week and the only other GP there is useless. Thanks for your reply :) The only medication I'm taking is Somac (40mg). I have been referred to a specialist, but (and this is why I'm worried about this high result), the last time I had LFTs done, they were all normal. Before then, for years they had been "slightly abnormal" (I intend to get copies of prior results, if they'll let me). The ER doc was quite concerned at how high these ones were, and puzzled that my gallbladder was fine. I also had abnormal (87 ug/g) results for faecal calprotectin in Nov last year, and my ANAs were 160 speckled. Don't know if that means anything with it, but thought I would also add that info. I also don't drink any alcohol, I've never had any my whole life.

Why would an old westie develope a terrible thirst? Blood tests for liver & kidneys are fine & not diabetic? He drinks about 6pints a day, and asks for more water when he drinks all in his dish. It is worst in the evening, and he has at least one accident each evening, even letting him out 4 or 5 times during the evening. Bilirubin is 1.95mg/dL aspartate aminotransferase is 324.0 U/L alanine aminotransferase is 85.0 U/l blood in urine is 40.0 Eri/uL Glucose is slightly low but nothing major. Leukocytes are double what they should be in urine. I have felt unwell for 7 months and I was misdiagnosed with menieres due to general malaise, bout of dizziness and severe episodes on mental confusion. Recently I had these tests done which from what I read could indicate several causes ie cirrhosis, liver or pancreatic cancer, hepatitis (although i was neg for this 2 yrs ago) I don't drink alcohol. I partake in moderate exercise, I eat extremely healthy making sure I get all the right nutrients as much as possible. I did used to abuse narcotics such as cocaine, mdma all those days are long in my past. I am currently living in Spain, away from my homeland in the UK. I realise these blood tests along with my symptoms are not good and I'm not sure whether I should return to the UK to speak to english doctors where I can better describe my symptoms or stick it out in Spain where I have been misdiagnosed up to this point. My GP has booked me in for an urgent consultation with a specialist in 2 weeks. I am thinking of going back to the UK in the meantime and try to double up on advice. I'm terrified of it being liver or pancreatic cancer as I am aware of the terrible survival rates.
How do blood test determine liver function? My Doctor had my blood drawn for testing. He said that my liver enzymes were high. How dangerous is this? Could it be normal for me? I suspect it's the Tylenol that has my liver "out of wack", and I have stoped taking it. I think Tylenol is far more dangerous than people have been led to believe,however Tylenol has became as American as apple pie. Tylenol is in some 60+ different over the counter cold, and flu medicines, if it is a liver toxin, getting it off the shelves, will require a Congressional mandate.
Liver blood test is high? Hi, I went to the doctors the other day and they done full blood tests because I have been feeling very lathargic, dizzy, not being able to concerntrate, stressed, depressed etc. All the blood was fine apart from my liver test, she said she has found something and needs to repeat this. I was really worried at the time so forgot to ask questions what it could be?? I only drink quite alot of alcohol once a month. liver lesion and blood tests? my mom had a blood test done a few months back and the results showed something wrong with her liver. my mom has had arthritis since her 20s and has had numerous joint replacement surgeries. she is on steady pain medication and so they thought it was all the medication taking its toll. fast forward. she was having an attack that sounded like it might be her gall bladder and so she went in to have an ultrasound. while they did in fact find gall stones they also found a lesion on her liver. she is going back in tomorrow for a more thorough cat scan on her liver and i am worried. most of the research i have done shows that benign lesions on the liver are common and usually nothing to worry about, however, these people also had normal blood tests. my question is if anyone out there with medical knowledge can let me know if her blood test showed damage to her liver does this increase the chances that it is cancerous? i know there is no way for anyone to tell me "your mom is fine" or "your mom has liver cancer" but any personal stories or medical advice would be appriciated. i am just scared. my mom's mom was diagnosed with breast cancer at the same age my mom is now. she lost her battle at 59. i have also lost both of my dad's parents to cancer so i do not take it lightly. i'm not ready to even think about losing my mom.

Why would the lab need to draw 14 separate vials of blood after an abnormal liver enzyme test.? My wife had a liver enzyme (AST) that should normally be at about 40, but was at 130+ on two separate tests. An initial follow-up test showed that it wasn't caused by vigorous exercise. Now they're drawing the 14 vials of blood. What tests are they likely to be doing?

Blood test showed slighly raised levels ( of one of my liver function tests )? i was suffering with night sweats for a number of nights and got the point where i was sweatting everynight for about a week.. and at one point i was getting very bad abdominal pain which felt like it was comming from my left side.. i went to the doctors and they asked me for a blood test.. and they told me that i have slightly raised levels in one of my liver funtion tests... mine read 117 when it should of been between 11-45 i think it said?... the doctor said it was abit high for my age... i do work out alot at the gym and have a high protien diet.. i usualy take a multivitamin everyday and i also was taking creatine about 2 or 3 weeks before i had the blood test.. i also use a weight gainer which adds an extra 1032 calories to my daily intake... i dont smoke, drink or do drugs... i always eat healthy ( had maybe 2 takeaways in 2011 ) i usualy have a cooked dinner with meat, veg everyday... i go out in town and get drunk maybe once every 5-6 weeks... im a light weight and cant handle very much.. everytime i do go out i always seem to get some sort of virus? where it affects the liquid in my ears and makes me feel dizzy for a week or so.. any ideas why my levels are high? is it my high protien diet? the weight gainer? the creatine?? pleaseee help im very worried. i havnt had any night sweats in about 3 weeks and that seems to have stopped which is strange

What is up!! My Calcium and Liver blood test results? So i recentely had a blood test and the doctor is concerned a bit on my calcium level. It says that between 8.5-10.5 is the normal amount. Mine is 12.5 and the doc wants me to come back in another week to get another blood test to see if it changes. I also have some high liver numbers that he was concerned about. Doc says it could be fatty liver or from the ADD meds i'm on. I also have some pulsing sensation on left side of stomach, joints are sore(especially shoulders rotator cuff), fatigue, loss of concentration, frequent small bowel movements. 2 weeks later.... So, I had my blood checked again for the Calcium level and Liver enzymes. They came back normalized! my calcium was 9.0 this time around, and my liver is in normal range. Is there any cause for concern? The only thing I changed during the 2 week time between the 2 different results was drinking more water. Could this change everything? I'm not sure what is going on.. any help would be appreciated. I actually do not drink alcohol on a regular basis. Just an occasiounal drink ( 1-2 ) , maybe twice a year. I've never been a heavy drinker... my body realy can't stand handle it. kinda gets my bowel and stomach in knots. I have been a bit overweight since I was 10 or so ( currently i'm 31 ). Oh and the ADD drug that i'm currently on is Daytrana 30mg, the patch.

Ultrasound and blood test no unusual results for liver damage/disease? I have had a blood test and ultrasound and both show no signs of liver damage/disease, i got these tests because i had dark urine, light stool and a pain on my right side (which is still kind of there) the doctor claimed the pain must be muscular. Now if i still have dark urine and a bit of a pain on my right side should i still be concerned of it being a liver problem??? The ultrasound also checked Kidneys/Spleen.

Hi I got my liver fuctions tests results to high, maybe is becuse I was drinking 3 days before the blood test? Ok, I had a blood test on Oct 21st, wich was wednesday, and also I went to the doctor because I have an infection bladder.... supposedly the doctor didn't know the reason, so he told me that I had to take an ultrasound to make sure what was the reason for the infeccion , well at that day I took it everything looked normal , I told the doctor that I was holding the pee 5 days before because I was coming home from a restaurant and the more important thing of my story is becuse I took some alcoholic beverages so holding my pee made all the infeccion blandder then i get started to hurt the lower abdomen next day , and after that day I was taking AZO for 2 days to see if the pain go away and I also because I started go to the bathroom every 3 min so that's why I went to the doctor and see what was going on? so at that day they told me that I had infection bladder and the same day I took a blood test and yestarday I went to the doctor so see my results and he told me everything looks normal but in my liver fuctions results were abnormals, supposedly my levels results: ALT : 74 and I have to have : 7-52 AST : 63 and I have to have : 13-39 wich means something is going on with my liver! , can someone tell me or maybe someone may recommend what should I do? I mean I like to drink but is not like Im drinking all days, is only sometimes during the weekend , sometimes I took shuts of tekila just 1 or 2 , and I drink the BJ's , margaritas, white zinfandel wich is wine and rare I drink beer...... to be honest yes I drink but is only during weekends , so can someone tell me maybe is the reason to have a high ALT/AST? Can Doctors see whether your spleen and liver are infected through Blood tests? I had glandular fever a few months ago... My spleen and liver got infected, my two doctors kept taking blood and so to see how it was progressing... if it was getting any better. Liver function blood test is it worth the bother? My GP has sent a liver blood function test in the post. No explain what for. I have a lot of blood tests and hate them and going to Dr's can be really distressing for me. I have overdosed twice in the last 6 months one on lithium only which is more kidney damage and one lithium, serqoul XR and lorazepam. And have had kidney function tested for, thyriod and lithium levels recent enough. I am on a lot of medication - Lithium Carbonate, Serqoul XR, Venalfaxine, Clonazepam, Levothyoxrine, Codiene, Omeprazole PRN Clorpromazine I have no known physical symptoms so it's not failing and was checked about a year ago- found fatty tissue but nothing else. I really don't feel up having this blood test and wanted to hear if people thought it would really be a problem not having it as it seems very routine. Have been taking the lithium for 4+ years with no problems. And most of the others over ab year with no problems either

Finger poke blood test for liver function? A nurse at my dr's office poked my finger and pipetted blood into a tube. within minutes the doc came back and said my liver was fine. Can you tell if you have any type of liver problem through a blood test? Like fatty liver? I went to my physician and for my blood results and they all came back normal except high cholesterol 196. My stomach tends to get a bloated after eating and I am afraid i might have ascites. My physician did what she had to do like tap on stomach and other things but did not say anything. Do you think it could be ascites or liver prob?

Liver profile blood test? Hi, i went to my docotrs recently for a checkup, and she asked for me to take a blood test, on the sheet she ticked 3 boxes, u/, liver profile and thyroid, the nurse then took a 3 vial blood sample i think about 10 mls each, 2 days later my docto had sent me a later saying that my liver test cam back as high and asking me to arrange a appointment as soon as, so she can discuss it and take more blood samples. now the question to anyone off yous is does anyone have any idea too what the liver being too high means? from any previous instructions, i have made an appointment too see her, but as i received the letter today i am abit concerned as too what might be wrong and i wont know until my appointment which is still 1 and a half week away thanks

Could the alcohol I drank the days before affected my liver blood test? In order to take a certain medication, I had to get a blood test to make sure I didn’t have any liver problems. The doctor didn’t warn me about not drinking before, so about 3 days before I drank quite a lot (4 beers, 3 shots of tequila) , and the night before (so about 12 hours before my blood test) I had a couple beers (about 2) as well. When I got my results back the doctor said my "enzyme" levels were a bit elevated which could be for a number of reasons including that I had been sick for a couple weeks before so he wants to wait a month to take another blood test to check my liver. My question is, could the alcohol I drank the days and night before have contributed to this blood test result that I could possible have a liver problem? I don’t want to worry so much for the next month…. Thanks all oh just to add a detail, my post makes me sound like an alcoholic or something, this was more drinking than I usually do b/c of a work event. I just turned 24 and I get buzzed every now and then but im not like a raging alcoholic so I dont think it is a long term damage thing from heavy drinking. Thats why im wondering if just drinking in the days before can come up on the test like that
pregnant: my full blood count came back needs for investigation but another test shows my liver ok? Is it time for a liver blood test? I'm 23 yrs. old...and have been drinking alcohol everyday for about 4 yrs...probably about 5-6 beers a day...but on the weekends i have a little bit more...i'm worried about my liver, but the doctor said that my liver can handle these amounts at my age, but didn't reccomend that i drink it...should i get tested or am i ok for a couple more years

Gallbladder was removed, blood test on liver is high? Is it common for chihuahuas to have there blood test come back with high liver enzymes? We took our chihuahua in to get spayed and when they did her blood work it came back with high liver enzymes in the blood.We have retaken the blood work several times and it always comes back with high liver enzymes.She is the smallest dog I have seem like 4 pounds.The vet never spayed her because it was to .risky.She doesnt look sick or act sick.Is this common with these dogs?I know that high liver enzymes being to high can be dangerouse but she doesnt appear to be effected by it at all.My chihuahua is two years old .We know that some dogs that have the high liver enzymes in the blood are due to liver shunts ,but they also appear sick and my dog doesnt.Thanks!

A blood test has shown my liver function to be slightly up - why? I have just emerged from a flu - like viral episode. Whilst still sweating at the end of the period of illness I went to the doctor who took bloods. It came back that my liver function, at the time I gave the blood sample, was slightly up. What would the most likely cause of this be? I am 34 years old. I should add, the result was given over the telephone today - I have an appointment for 10.40 am tomorrow at which I will discuss the results in full.

If I had some type of cancer that had gone to the stage of spreading to my lymph nodes would blood tests show? I have got lymph nodes in my groin area that I have not felt before. I noticed them about 6 weeks ago so went along to the Drs to have them checked out. I was suffering with a bad cold/flu type illness at the time and the Doc put it down to a viral infec. I have had lots of other odd symptoms: cold water running sensation through my arms, pins and needles in my hands and feet, dizzy, nausea, feeling of pressure and throbbing under my arms and in my groin. I have had Complete Blood Count, thyroid, liver and kidney function test, inflammation test, diabetes, anemia blood tests and a urine test. Everthing was normal including physical exams of stomach, strength and reflexes. I had a very close friend who died last year after finding a lump under her arm which she soon found out was melanoma cancer that had got to the stage of spread ing to her lymph glands. If I had cancer and it had got to the stage of spreading to my lymph glands would one of the tests I have had show an abnormality?
Elevated Liver Blood test (Bilirubin, Ast, and total protein), should I be concerned? I just got back my blood work up on my liver. My AST is 59 (10-45 is normal), my Total protein is 5.9 (6.0-8.0 is normal) and Bilirubin 1.7 (<1.2 is normal). Should I be concerned about this, does anyone have any ideas as to why all of these would be elevated? Thanks. (I do not drink or smoke), it is thought that i might have a metabolic problem such as a mitochonidral diease. Anyone heard of such problems with my results?
high liver blood test? I am a 36 year old woman-- I had gastic by pass surgery the end of Feburary (have lost 93lbs so far). I just had a liver panel done and my count came up as 90, which they said is higher than normal. Does anyone know what this means? Should I be worried? What should I do to bring it to the normal range. What causes this. Thanks for your help!
Can anyone give advice on liver function blood test I was so angry at my GP.? I had flu, pleurisy and a kidney infection. I was put on two different anti-biotics and co-codamol. After recovery and return to work I had a blood test and was told my liver was damaged. The levels indicated it could be alcohol abuse, I rarely drink and I felt I was being accused. When I argued this I was told it 'could' be paracetamol!! Will my liver return to normal and how can I help it? Obviously I don't take paracetamol now but I worry if I have an odd glass of wine. Is there anything I can do to help myself.
