Will probiotic bacteria(friendly bacteria) affect the urea breath test results? I just took my urea breath test (a test to detect the presence of H.pylori). I was told that I couldn't take antibiotics, antacids or soft drinks before the test. But they didn't mention about probiotic bacteria. I had a probiotic bacteria pill before the test. So will it affect the results of the test?
My Dr has recommended I take a Urea breath test for a suspected case of Helicobacter pylori.? I notice that I have a drink of orange before the test followed by a drink of some solution made from a powder that comes with the test kit.....any idea's what this solution will taste like?
What's the connection of Urea Breath test to H.pylori? Does this mean that if you're having Bad breath test, does this mean you're more likely to have an H.pylori ? Please can anyone explain it to me well. Need an answer to this as soon as possible. Thanks in advance!

How long does it take for H Pylori breath test results? My specilalist says 1-2 weeks. Is it not possible for them to give me the result back straight away? Isn't all they have to do measure the urea levels or something like that? Surely that is an almost instant process?

I wa recently diagnosed with Acid Reflux... after going through several treatments, I still have pain.? What else could it possibly be? I took an upper GI tract test of some sort before I was diagnosed, and I really cant believe that the test was not accurate... I recently did a C UREA breath test, and Ill have the results to that test in about a week now. Im just wondering what I can expect. Librax Helps.. But what am I suffering from? I was diagnosed with H.pylori infection. Undergoes triple dosage therapy Was tested negative in a Urea Breath Test 1 month later when I completed my therapy. Somehow, the discomfort below the sternum is back. (GERD). Feel nausea all the time I seen my doctor. She told me my Urea Breath Test is negative. It shouldn't be H. Pylori bacteria. Then she prescribed omeprazole, domperidone for me. Things didn't turn out well though it keeps my nausea under control. One day I tried taking librax with omeprazole but without domperidone. Wow, I feel so much better. I don't feel acid burning but I feel there is something there instead. On another day, I just took omeprazole without librax. I could feel the acid burn. I realised librax help to relieve my discomfort. Any suggestion what I suffering from? Should I continue with librax and omeprazole since it relieve my pain? This is not a doctor presciption.
Stomach pain? HI, over the past 2-3 months ive been having terrible stomach pain mostly when i eat and the only way to relieve the pain is for me to lie down for about 30-45 mins. I cant really explain the pain and i dont have any other strange symptoms only that my stomach hurts whenever i eat (it's as if i feel full sometimes after taking only a bite of a brownie even though i havnt ate all day) Currently i've done blood tests, unltrasounds and even a "urea breath test" to see if theres any bacteria in my stomach and all results have come back negative. My doctor has made an appointment with a specialist but i dont know how much longer i can take the pain. I'm 15 years old, very athletic and i dont have a history of any health problems (also i dont think stress is a factor in my situation) Do u have ANY idea what it could be...and what type of stomach disorders do people have(i want to research about them and see if my case is anything similar) Please help and thank you
Radiation Question, can you help? Hi, I've had 2 chest X-ray in the December/Jan area and then I had a barium swallow (with the X-rays etc) done about 1.5 months ago. They now want to send me for a Urea breath test where you swallow Urea with C14 or C13 attached to it. Is that too much radiation in a small time frame? This is what the test says "The test produces radiation exposure equal to 24 hours of normal background. In animal experiments, such low doses of radiation do not carry measurable risk. Preclinical studies were not conducted on 14C-urea. The estimated dose equivalent received from a single administration (1μCi 14C) is about 0.3 mrem." Should I be worried? The average barium swallow radiation exposure is: 2 mSv Leila, They're also scheduling me for the endoscopy but that's to compliment this test. The barium showed reflux, now comes the test for H. Pyroli and the endoscope to see how much damage has occurred to the oesophagus and how to treat if if need be.
Is there something wrong with me? i had these two tests the other days and i have an appointment with the doc tomorrow, but i really need to know if something is wrong with me, please people, don't answer if you're not 100% sure. the first test was (H. pylori antigen in stool.) and its result says "positive: the detection of the cytotoxin producing helicobacter pylori which causes gastric complictions is recommended - Urea breath test and/or helicobacter pylori antigen in stool are recommended to monitor therapy and to detect eradication." and the second one was for (stool examination), and its result says "few entamoeba histolytica cysts".

TSH,3Rd Generation Low level? Hi there!!! I was taking some supplements like NA Cysteine, Grapefruit Seed extract and Melatonin. A few weeks ago I had very strange mental experiences. Since that time I have been feeling very strange physically as well. I have been feeling my pulse almost all the time. My head is pulsing as well. Since then I have been sleeping much lighter. I wake up from almost any noise(very unusual for me), and my ears are ringing all the time(I mean I can hear the ringing when I am in a quiet place). I went to a doctor. Did some blood works and the only Abnormal indications were from. TSH, 3Rd Generation which is 0.27 where the norms are 0.40 - 4.50 Nobody told me anything in regard to this indicator. As well as I had UBIT(Urea Breath Test) - detected(some bacteria that causes Ulcer and stomach cancer) I already drank some Antibiotics. Could somebody tell me something more about TSH and if I should look for doctor in regards to it. Should I do some diet or what soever? And if there is some connection between the TSH and UBIT. Thanks a lot.
I have acid reflux, intestinal inflammation, and nausea/vomiting and I'm only 19; what's going on? I've had an endoscopy, I've had a urea-breath test done, I've had an upper G.I. series done, and my doctor still doesn't know what's wrong with me. Any input? Oh, and please don't recommend dietary changes; I'm already on an alkaline diet, I exercise every day, and I don't eat within three-to-four hours before bed time. I'm not overweight, I'm don't use alcohol or drugs, and I take great care of myself by eating healthily.
after 4 weeks of ulcer treatment can i drink? hi people..i was under treatment for h pylori for 4 weeks now (2 antibiotics and ...esomeprazole ;) and eating only steamed food, i was very regular) so yesterday the doctor said the urea breath test was negative no more bacteria. so my question is, in 4 weeks the ulcer is completly healed? and after these 4 weeks can i drink alcohol for small quantities like 4 glasses in weekend? ( but no wine and no beers? i mean only drinks with low alcohol rate) but for sure no smoking again... thank you guys
Why I've had a distended abdomen for years? Hi, My name is Julian and I've had a distended stomach since I was 11 (I'm now 19.) I developed acid reflux, chronic heartburn, nausea, vomiting, uncomfortable fullness after meals, diarrhea, constipation, and inflamed small intestines (at the age of 17.) I've been vacuum pulling my stomach in for the last eight years; simply for aesthetic purposes. I want to know what causes this, and how I can diagnose and cure this ongoing problem. Oh, and to clear things up about what I've already done: I've had an endoscopy, and upper G.I. series, a urea-breath test (for H. Pylori,) and nothing has come back with any information on what's going on, just that something is going on and it's damaging my intestines. Thank you for your help. I'm thin, healthy, and on an alkaline diet; I have the body of a thin, fit person, but I have this bulbous, distended abdomen. Please help.
Post mortem revealed my cat died from Lymphoma, should my vet have seen this after 4 weeks of hell? took Hugo (6 year old long haired cat, on my profile pic) to the vets for his booster on 30th Jan 2010. He had been off his food a bit that week but I thought it was due to the tins he sometimes goes off but apart from that seemed fine. They gave him his injection and a worming tablet and we went home. Got home and he was playing in the garden. Come tea time he was in his bed, we went out and didn't think anything of it. Got back at midnight and he hadn't moved, I knew something was wrong and came down in the night to check on him. The next day he clearly had a fever and was breathing fast. My friend who is a vet nurse said it could have been his booster. Rung the vets but they said "it definitely won't be the booster". He seemed a bit better Monday but then worse on Tuesday so I took him to vet. His temperature was 104.6!! They gave him some metacam and an antibiotic injection and sent him home. He had been off his food totally and went straight home to eat, thank goodness! The next day he seemed to be going back down hill yet again. Took him back to the vets, they kept him in on a drip and next morning he was raging to get out and came home, bright as a button! By Sunday he was quiet again, not eating much, obviously not well. Took him back to vets that week, (temperature 103.8) they kept him in and did more bloods (bloods for first week showed low white cell count and high urea but nothing major). They kept him in for three days, tested leukemia and FIV, both negative. Did more bloods second week and they were normal. Hugo didn't respond to metacam (painkiller to reduce temperature) or the drip during the first 24 hours, he only showed improvement with steroids. By Thursday he seemed a bit better and came home but I knew he wasn't right. I had asked about all kinds of diseases, including lymphoma, Feline peritonitis, inflamed bowel disease, all the major cat illnesses (leukemia etc.) but the vets didn't seem to think anything seemed familiar. Female vet said, "he's not losing enough weight for anything serious". I asked for an Xray and ultrasound scan but they said it wasn't necessary. Went back in on Saturday for another steroid injection. By following Friday he was the same, went back again and they gave him methodone, I was beside myself at this point. They said that they thought his kidneys were swollen but kidney function on bloods were normal. He was eating little bits but not much, he had gone from 3.82kg to 3.61kg. I went home that weekend and nursed him all I could, I let him sleep with me in the spare room, I knew he was seriously unwell. Monday morning came and I was back at the vets with him, asking them to take him in on the drip as I knew this had helped before. They were suspecting pancreatitis. Tests done for this and more bloods showed negative for pancreatitis and some deterioration in the kidneys function. I was begging for a scan, they just kept shooting me down and saying a scan wouldn't show anything. On Wednesday afternoon female vet rang me and said that they wanted to operate, despite not doing the scan that I had requested so many times. I agreed to it but when I went to the vets that night to see my darling Hugo they had been arguing about whether to operate and the male partner in the vets over ruled the female as we were then waiting for pancreatitis test to come back. Test came back negative on 25th Feb so they were planning on operating on 26th Feb to see if they could see anything. When I got there that Thursday evening to see my soulmate Hugo he was in severe pain, could hardly breath and it broke my heart to see him like that. They gave him more methadone to ease the pain which it did. He had another session of difficulty breathing at 10.30pm that evening, they managed to settle him with oxygen and methadone but he died as he yelled out in pain at 11.00pm. I am totally devasted. R.I.P. Hugo, my best friend, I miss you dearly xx I am beating myself up about this, I took him to a trusted vet, did all the research I could, took advice whilst Hugo was in hospital from two other vets. Everyone seemed to draw a blank. All I know is that I was desperate for that scan. Could anyone tell me what they think Hugo could have died from? If I could have done anything different and more importantly what the vets should have done to help him? I feel the vets have let him down terribly :-( Post mortem results revealed my dear Hugo died from Lymphoma in his kidneys, lungs and a lesion in his pancreas. I feel so sorry for my little boy suffering, truly I do, my pathologist told me a scan would have shown this. How do vets diagnose lymphoma?

Endocrine Abnormality Question? A 19-year-old Hispanic man is brought in to the emergency department by his family because of 3-4 days of nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. The patient also complained of diffuse abdominal cramping as well as a few watery stools over the last few days. He admitted to "partying a Iittle" with his friends prior to the onset of symptoms and drank a "few beers" as well as eating at local taco stands in Tijuana. Since then, he has been urinating frequently and drinking juice, but he has not been eating much. When he is able to eat, it does not exacerbate his abdominal pain. He denies any fever, chills, dysuria, or constipation. The patient's mother, who is diabetic, is very concerned about her son's habits and lifestyle. On examination, the patient appears slightly lethargic, but answers questions appropriately. His lips and oral mucosa are parched and dry and there is a slightly stale "sweet" odor on his breath. His pulse is 101/min and respirations are 18/min. The patient has mild diffuse tenderness in his abdomen, but no peritoneal signs, including rebound tenderness, can be elicited. No hepatosplenomegaly is detected and the rectal examination is normaI. Question 1 of 5 Which of the following is the most likely diagnosis? / A. Acute appendicitis / B. AIcoholic hepatitis / C. How unusual is it for a 21 year old (myself) to be placed on an ACE inhibitor for hypertension management? I am 21 years old and i have borderline hypertension, 140/85mmHg. I wake up most nights to use the bathroom and am thirsty nearly all of the time. If i do not drink at least 1 litre of water before lunchtime, i get headaches and my urine is rarely fully clear. I am not diabetic as I have been tested for this, and my urea and creatinine were also fine, although the were at the upper limits of normal. There is some history of heart disease in the family with my dad also suffering hypertension. Can anyone shed some light? A while ago playing sport i got knocked in my nose, in which the swelling has not went down. This is very irritating and I sometimes get short of breath when trying to breath through my nose. Trying to sleep at night is a disaster. Could this apnea be causing my hypertension?
Rapid heart rate, weight loss, blood tests show nothing?!? Ok so in January this year I fainted on the London underground (felt sick and faint and weak before I actually fainted). It was extra packed and hot so I didn't worry too much. But since then, like on the same day, a few hours after it happened, I've had a rapid heart rate, as in, it's faster than usual. Doing more beats per min. And usually every day there will be moments where it speeds up even more to about 110-120 bpm but for no reason! And I feel short of breath/like I can't get enough air. And occassionally I have palpitations for about 10 seconds. In May/June my mum noticed I looked thin, I admit I hadn't weighed myself for months so dunno if it was sudden or gradual. I normally way 7 1/2 stone, I'm 5ft 2 and have a naturally slim build, like others in my family. So I don't want any comments saying my "normal" weight was too low. Everyone is different. So anyway, weighed myself and I was 7 stone 2! But I hadn't changed my diet/appetite so it happpened without reason!. Went on holiday in June/July so didn't have time to focus on it. When I got back I looked thinner and then weighed 6 stone 13! Went to GP, they did blood tests for: thyroid function, kidney and liver function, full blood count, ESR, urea and electrolytes and creatinine. They all came back fine, although she said my potassium levels were slightly low but it was nothing to worry about. Also had ECG, all it showed was my heart rate was too fast. I have to note down when my pulse speeds up and go back in a few weeks. They might decide to do a 24hr or 7 day ECG. I have been eating a lot more for the past few weeks, haven't lost any more weight which is good. But it's really unlike me to lose so much weight and struggle to put it back on. It's as though my metabolism is too fast, but the results were fine and my GP doesn't yet know what it could be! The heart rate is not related to diet, caffeine etc. One thing I noticed is it seems to speed up when I'm anxious/hyper.excited etc. I know it's a normal response in humans, but the fact it goes so fast, and happens when I get the teeniest little bit happy seems odd. It's like my body is over-reacting to things. I never used to be like this! No I am not on drugs and I don't drink excessive amounts of alcohol. It isn't any medication I'm on. I don't think it's stress cos I've hardly been stressed this year and I usually get headaches when I'm stressed. I tried cutting out caffeine for a while but it had no effect so I know it isn't that. Another thing that has started about a month (maybe a bit longer) ago was that sometimes, say every week-ish, I have a few days where I get a really dry mouth and I feel so awful and drained of energy. I didn't mention it to my GP, but I will next time I go. I drink plenty of water, I've actually been drinking more for the past few months cos I knew I probs didn't get enough and decided to take action lol. So it's not what I drink. And it's awful, it's the sort of dry mouth you get when you've had alcohol/you're hungover! It's happened again the past few days, but yesterday and the day before, I also kept needing to pee. Today, I haven't had that. But I've still got the dry mouth and I feel really drained and awful. I keep wondering about diabetes. But the symptoms would be constant, right? Although I'm sure I read about a form of it where the symptoms come and go or may not be as obvious and then it develops into "full blown" diabetes. Anyone know anymore/know what I am talking about? My nan has type 2, diagnosed a few years ago, most likely because of her weight, age, etc. I know with type 1 it can occur on someone who has no family history, but am I right in thinking type 2 usually does have history? So would that mean that my dad has the "gene" from my nan and then passed it onto me? Cos I read about MODY (type 2 in young peple) and wondered... Sorry for such a long question, but any help would be much appreciated :) I just wondered it anyone else has had these issues, if they could give any more advice, and what they think about these diabetes symptoms that seem to come and go.
