Blood test during pregnancy?
I went for my 2nd scan today and found out that I am 14wks instead of 11wks (yeah). Anyways my doctor has sent me for all these blood tests which included a test for downs syndrome. Is all these tests normal or is there something I should worry about? I'm 24 so I didn't think it really necessary but he did ask me whether I wanted the downs syndrome test or not. I said why not, its better to know.

- nope these test are completely normal. nothing you should worry about at all. congrats!
- Yep. take them. You will be a pin cushion before this is all over. Take all the tests. talk to the hubby about worst case senarios too. If the baby has some problem, how will you handle it? It is great that nowadays you can find out a head of time if there is anything to worry about. You'll be fine. You will also have to take a glucose test too.
- He really should've explained things a bit better. A place to start for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prenatal_diagnosis Testing for Down's isn't routine. There's nothing you should worry about, though; you might just have a doctor in the habit of testing. But he shouldn't be doing as much without explaining the ramifications. If the test suggests an increased likelihood of Down's syndrome, you'll be looking at more testing, usually via amniocentesis -- which carries a risk of miscarriage. If you wouldn't abort, don't bother with the test. Edit: you do not "have to" take a glucose test.
- They're all normal. how old are you? They do the Downs test for people closer to 40 as a standard & some dr's (like mine) in their 30's. Don't stress about it. It's good to know, but not worth worrying about :)
