  1. Dont worry about it! Its a simple test, where they just draw a little sample and ship it off to the lab. And no, hospitals are very sterile, so the chances of "capturing" aids is very very slim to none. Virtualy impossible, needles are not used twice at hospitals. Its just a prick for one second, then itts over! No need to stress. - Good Luck!
  2. heck yes! all of the fears above are entirely valid. in fact they should all be magnified. and the risk of getting run over by a bus on the way to the lab should be added to the list.
  3. It's very common for a doctor's office to send patients to a lab to have blood draws, as often the doctor's office doesn't have a lab for all the blood tests that could possibly be needed by hundreds of different patients. Calm down and know that for many of us, going to the "lab" and getting bloodwork done is second nature. If you are concerned at all about contracting AIDS or anything else for that matter, that can be handled quite easily. Explain to the phlebotomist (person that takes the blood) what your fears are, and ask that they open the needle in front of you - then you will see it is new and has not been used, hence no transfer of tainted blood. Then as long as the phlebotomist knows of your concerns, and any concerns are valid in our own way, have him/her walk you through what it is, exactly, that they are doing AS they are doing it. Most lab techs are more than happy to walk you through the entire process and take all of your fears away to make it a pleasant experience. Best of luck, hope this helps you relax.
  4. First I think they will test for the levels of cholesterol within you body, not if you have cholesterol. You will fill a strong prick as the take blood samples. They may fill three vials to test your blood. Who ever takes you blood must hold the needle steady and firm as they change out the vials. You should feel no additional pain,. Each needle can only be used once by law. Only one needle will be used. The whole process may take two minutes. Ask for a complete blood work to take advantage of this draw to gain a complete picture of your health. You should do this annually. I do. Best Wishes.
  5. When they take blood they will put something like a big rubber band around the top of your arm, this is to help them find a good vein. They do a very quick stick and its done. As far as being worried about getting AIDS ask the nurse to let you watch her get the needle and alcohol swabs and vial ready, also ask her to wear gloves as I know many nurses and doctors don't do this unless you ask. I ask! Also try to stay calm while having the test done because it is over before you could say ouch. Hope this helps.Good Luck
