How early can I know baby's blood type?
I am pregnant, I want to know my baby's blood type as early as possible. Can I find it out before the baby is born? I am going to deliver at Kaiser Permanente hospital, do they automatically do a blood type test when the baby is born?

- The day the baby is born! You can ask them to get the blood type right away- Since Im a Negative Blood Type, they are going to test my lil one right away- Since if he's Negative then I dont have to get the Rogam shot- and if he's a Positive I will.
- They usually test when the baby is born.
- You cant know until AFTER the baby is born. Im sure they can do a test when your pregnant but finding a doctor who thinks its a neccesary procedure would be hard, if you could even find one! they do it in the hospital and you just have to ask when the baby is born.they will keep it in the babys folder that follows her to her pediatricians office.
- They automatically check when the baby is born, but there's no way to know until the baby's born, or unless you have a paternity test done. But that requires an amniocentesis, and is not only painful but risky. I was told both my children's blood types before I was released from the hospital. They take either your blood type, or the father's. So there's really only two options anyway.
- THE day the baby is born they do it. but make sure to ask because they wont tell you.
- no way till the baby is born
- They do not routinely type the baby unless there is a medical reason to do so; such as a possibility of ABO incompatibility. It pretty much depends on your blood type. Mention to your doctor that you want to know your baby's blood type. They can get it from the cord blood so your baby doesn't have to be stuck. RN
- They are more likely to do it if you're a negative RH type, but it's very difficult (nigh on impossible) to convince them to do it before the baby's born. My hospital automatically checked for us. Make sure they know you want to know the blood type. It may be procedure there for them to automatically type the baby in case there are any complications after delivery, and they may be able to just open the chart and tell you once you ask. Also, be aware the baby may NOT necessarily take the same blood type as you or your husband. You are both carriers for different genetic traits, and some (like blood type) you can carry multiple genes for the same trait (like red hair skipping a generation). My husband and I are both type A (I'm neg, he's pos) and both our children have been O pos. It's always best to have the baby checked so you know if there's a future emergency, and I've yet to see a hospital that will deny you that.
