Wouldn't it be a good idea for the police to perform random in-home drug tests on citizens?
Couldn't random, 2am urinalysis make us all just a little bit safer? Those who fail the test get an automatic 30 days in jail. This is America. Our government should protect us from ourselves. http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2008/oct/29/1029_student/ Mike: On the Houston thing. Do you have a link? That is interesting. Makes me think of "1984".

- Ha ha! No, more like drug tests on all the people that live off of welfare.
- It is not the government's job to protect us from ourselves, that is the problem today. The government should protect us from each other and outside forces. When they began deciding what was best for us we lost sight of the need and purpose of government.
- A conservative idea followed through using liberal principles. Hmmm. It could bring the two parties together! The republicans get to send everyone to jail, and the democrats get to use extreme government control. It's almost too perfect.... McCain can lead the hunts and Obama can plan them from the oval office. Everyone is happy.
- Your a winner!!!!!!
- NO..
- You'd have the police do this without any suspicion of drug use by the people involved? This goes way beyond the bounds of reasonable search and seizure. Any court would strike this down as a violation of the Fourth Amendment. Besides, I doubt that police officers would be all that interested in waking people up at 2 AM to make them pee in a cup. And if they only did this in certain neighborhoods, where they thought drugs were more likely, then they'd get accused of racial profiling.
- On a related note but one actually considered the Houston Police Chief wanted to put surveillance cameras INSIDE private homes. But it was the English surprise warrantless searches that gave us the American Revolution. I would expect similar results if they tried something like this.
- I think these would be good and new ideas for the police to work on. After all they need to be busy!
- Sure, as long as you're all prepared to see a 300% increase in your taxes if not more.
- This is not a fascist state last time I heard, we have rights to privacy, the cops need to have limited power, not limitless... Remember, they are here to protect us, not harrass us! My first demand if this were to happen, your house would be the first on the list every time, your idea, you can participate and see how you like cops who trample your rights... ACAB!
- That would be a horrible idea.
