Can blood tests help diagnose cancer?
I am a self admitted hypochondriac who obseses about my health all the time. I hope you can help. My newest stress in my fear of lymphoma. I went to go get checked out and he felt all of my nodes and said there was nothing wrong, and he took blood samples. I got them back and he said that everything was fine. my question, if I had lymphoma, I know the blood test wouldn't be able to diagnose it, but would there be some white flag shooting up saying I need more testing? I just need some peace of mind because I read the symptoms and I think I get them in my head.

- First off, if you keep thinking about something negative, it'll eventually happen. So I strongly advise you to NOT think about health problems at all, unless it's significant. I'm not sure if blood tests do diagnose cancer, but you should stop worrying about your health, because subconsciously you worrying about it could lead to something bad that wouldn't have been in your body before.
- you are fine
- Yes, the blood test would let you know if you need more testing. Quit going to WebMD or specifically reading/looking up symptoms. You could worry yourself to death...literally.
- Some sorts of cancer will do the following - > your white blood count will be increased, i > f you have a tumour which most cancers do you will have a high crp/esr level in your blood (not necessarily cancer though - it just shows up if there's inflammation in your body) > your LDH level will probably be high if you have lymphoma > your liver function will be out of whack with some cancers > you may develop anaemia in some cancers (DON"T stress though, anaemia is very common; it can be caused from cancer in abouit 1% of cases - otherwise it's a simple iron or other mineral/vitamin deficiency These are all factors that show up in the blood. I had lymphoma and i had all of the above, not to mention horrid night sweats, fatigue, fevers, bone pain and many other symptoms. Some of my liver enzymes were high, my LDH was high (i think, can't quite remember), i was severely anaemic, my white cells were high, my crp/esr were above 200 (normal is below 10) Seriously, i know someone who is a hypochondriac and they received great help form a psychologist. I don't know if you're Australian or not but if so you can go to your GP and see if you're eligible for the medicare system where you get 5 appointments with a psych for about $20 per appointment. If you're not an aussie i'd recommend getting help - i suffer post-cancer anxiety and i get help for it!! Good luck :)
