can a drug test tell the difference between heroin and methadone?

my son is on a methadone program but i think he might be using heroin again i want to drug test him.

1. i think for a heroin test you would be testing for opiates, and im almost positive meth doesnt contain opiates
2. Yes a drug test can tell the difference, but there are many different drug tests available so the right one needs to be done. Methadone is most definitely an opiate which is very similar to heroin, and for this reason is a really dumb choice of treatment for heroin addiction. If you are worried about your son returning to heroin use, you may wish to think about getting him a better treatment that breaks opiates addiction and renders these drugs ineffective.
