Blood Drug Testing

Did you have the blood tests that check for genetic disoders?

I just had them done the other day, but that was before I heard that there is a huge number of false positives. Now I'm terrfiied to get the results back. First of all, how soon do the results come back, and second of all, does anyone know how often these blood tests come back with false positives? Thanks..

  1. I chose not to have the test done so I wouldn't worry myself about somthing I couldn't change anyway. I'm not sure about the other question about when the results get back, sorry
  2. Its pretty often that they come back w/ false positives. I wouldn't sweat it, though. Just be careful how many times they poke at you with things, because that's probably more dangerous.
  3. its not likely that they will come back with a false positive..this has happened before..but really its not common.. i had them done yes,,and mine came back normal..theres probably a one in a million chance that your results will come back with a false positive..dont worry
  4. I've never even heard of the whole false positives thing. When they did mine I didn't find out for a month and it was at my scheduled doc. appt.
  5. I had mine last week Friday. You should have the results by your next doctors visit.
  6. I refused the test. I knew I would have the baby regardless, so there was no point in adding extra stress to my life at that point.
  7. Yes I had them done I think the tests are pretty accurate and the chance of a false positive is not too high but I'm not completely certain. Sorry I don't remember how long it took to get the results back, maybe call your doctor and ask how long it takes before they get the results or ask if they've gotten them in already.
  8. I GOT MY RESULTS 1 WEEK LATER & IF I WERE YOU I WOULDN'T HAVE GOTTEN THEM DONE. I REGRET IT NOW :/ I GOT A POSITIVE FOR OPEN SPINE, NOW I HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE IF MY BABY REALLY HAS IT. I HAVE MY APPOINTMENT ON FRIDAY THE 29TH. I HOPE YOURS COMES OUT NEGATIVE FOR ALL! THE SCREENING TEST ISNT 100% ACCURATE AND IF YOU GET A POSITIVE IT DOESN'T REALLY MEAN YOUR BABY HAS A BIRTH DEFECT ALL IT MEANS IS THAT YOU HAVE A GREATER CHANCE OF HAVING A BABY WITH A DEFECT. THE NORMAL RANGE FOR A 23 YEARS OLD (ME) IS 1 IN 1000 MY RESULT WAS 1 IN 152, THAT'S WHY IT CAME BACK POSITIVE. IF YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE SEARCH SCREENING TEST ON GOOGLE IT SHOULD HELP
  9. There are no false positives. This is a HUGE misconception. These tests are NOT for diagnostic purposes, they merely indicate a level of risk for these conditions, such as 1:100 or 1:250. An elevated level of risk would indicate the necessity for more tests, such as an ultrasound to look for physical "soft markers", and the possibility of an amniocentesis, which is the ONLY way to actually diagnose with 100% certainty any kind of genetic condition. IMO, I'd rather know if my baby is affected with something than be blindsided at birth. If your level of risk comes back elevated and your doctor recommends further testing, I would do it, so you can get educated on your baby's condition, assemble a team of professionals for the birth, etc. It's not about "I don't want to know because I wouldn't abort my baby anyway", as many women have said for their reason to decline any testing.
  10. I didn't get a choice in the matter. My doctor just said "So, I'm sending you for blood work and ultrasounds..." And so I got them done. It all came back fine though. The results will likely be back for your next doctors appointment.
  11. I have gotten them done for all 5 kids. They have all come back negative, and so far I have 4 healthy kids. (one is still baking) I have personally never known anyone who has gotten a false positive. I chose to have the tests done because I think if something is wrong, it is good to know so there are no surprises. My midwife said no news is good news, so if they don't call you within a few days, then you're OK. Try not to stress too much and remember that even if it does say something may be wrong, they will do more tests to see. Good luck!
  12. I did not have these tests done in either of my pregnancies, it wouldn't make a difference to me one way or the other, so why worry about it? Life won't give you any more than you can handle.
  13. Hey sweetie, try not to stress okay? I had both the genetic disorders check bloods and Downs Syndrome ultrasound check as I had suffered a previous miscarriage and both turned out for me LOW RISK - which means no further investigation needed. (I'm 26 by the way) I cannot tell you about the rate of false positives but if you find out something in your bloods, they will do other thorough ultrasound etc checks to rule things out. You're just getting to know your baby more and though stressful remember that these tests indicate a RISK factor of having a particular genetic disorder - not that the baby HAS IT! Okay? So if your tests come back a bit questionable - REMEMBER THAT FIRST so you don't stress right away. By the way Hun, I'm not saying they will come back bad so think positive! I can't tell you not to worry, but you should hear back within the week. By the way, if you DON'T hear back within the week, that is not necessarily a cause for worry either. It just means that the results were not urgent enough to have called you about! So in that case I would ring up and they would probably go (like I received over the phone) - "Oh, your tests were totally fine! Low risk so no further need for testing." Yay! By the way, in case you were curious, my brother was born when I was 14 and my Mum 37. She got this testing done, and the Downs Syndrome testing done and was told that she was HIGH RISK for Downs Syndrome. They suggested that she get a amniocentesis done to check and my mother decided against it as there is a risk of miscarriage with this procedure and my parents tried so long for another baby and this was their little miracle and they didn't want to risk loosing him with or without a disorder by just checking. And my brother is PERFECT. No Downs and a very considerate, caring, intelligent sweetheart of a 13 year old! So RISK factor doesn't mean Bub has the genetic disorder! And my Mum had a HIGH risk. Okay? Hope this helped at all. Please don't stress sweetie!
  14. I refused the testing due to the fact that they aren't reliable. I just imagined getting a positive and worrying through my whole pregnancy only to find that my daughter was fine. I knew that I would love my baby no matter what so I decided against it. My husband felt the same way.
  15. I had the test done a week ago and I was expecting a positive b/c of all the stories of false positives I've heard. But when I went to my doctor the Thursday she told me they were all negative. I believe they get the results back pretty fast and if there are any issues they will call you. If not then you will probably get the results at your next checkup.
