Blood Drug Testing

How much blood is drawn for a thyroid test?

I have to get my thyroid hormones measured. I hate (hate, HATE) needles. Not that people LIKE them, but I have a moderate phobia. How much blood gets drawn for thyroid hormone tests? Is the needle big?

  1. They don't take very much blood, a couple of tablespoons maybe. The needle is quite small. I advise not watching them draw the blood. Focus hard on something else and breathe deeply. If you tend to get faint with needles, tell them beforehand. It only takes a few seconds, and the prick is not bad at all.
  2. Once they stick the needle in, there's no more pain taking 1 vial or two. It's really just a pinch. If it really bohers you, ask for them to use the buttefly needle. Its very small. I have bad veins so they use my hand for the blood work and they always use the butterfly. They can use it or your arm as well. If you have thyroid testing done, make sure to do it first thing in the morning when metabolism is slower. I suggest a TSH, Free T4, Free T3, and an antibody test.
