What is the usual timescale for results of a Liver Function Blood Tests performed at an NHS GP surgery?
Public Comments
- 3 to 5 days if you do not hear then your doctor will phone or write to you
- It depends on how fast the doctor wants the results. If he needs them right away, they can be ready the same day...if not, it can take from the same day to up to seven days, depending on the lab that does the testing. Some labs are faster than others are. The doctor may do three or more types of blood testing to check the liver: 1) the liver enzymes (ALT,AST,GGT, Alk Phos) will show if there maybe damage to the liver cells. 2) the liver function (Bilirubin, INR, PT, PTT, Albumin) will show if the liver cells are able to perform the functions needed to keep the body well 3) the liver viral tests to see if a virus has entered the body and is using the liver cells to replicate itself. (known as Hepatitis A,B,C,etc) We get the tests results within the same day or the next day at our lab. Patients are allowed to have a copy of the lab, if they have a fax machine where the lab can fax it to them or they can receive a copy from the doctor himself. To look up any lab tests results, here is a site you can click on to see what they are and why they are done: http://www.labtestsonline.org If it is just the liver tests you want to look up, you can type Liver functions tests or liver enzymes in your search engine to learn more. I hope this information has been of some help to you. Best wishes
