Blood Drug Testing

How long does it take to get blood test results?

My mom and I are big worriers. Maybe you can put us at ease a little bit? A month ago, my mom had a blood test done and today the doctor called her and said she has a cancellation tomorrow and asked if she would like to come in tomorrow. I know some doctors ask you to come in even though nothing is wrong and they call you in right away if something is wrong. So when would the doctor of gotten the results?

Public Comments

  1. 10-15 minutes
  2. Usually they will call you with the results? If they did a test (depending for what) they would tell you what they would do to contact you before you leave the office. I have had to go in for my results and everything was fine so i wouldn't worry about it but definitely go in like the doctor ordered.
  3. The results are usually available within a week. Perhaps the doctor expected you to call after about a week for the results. Sometimes doctors want to discuss the results even though the results are OK.
  4. It depends what kind of test your mother had done! Your general blood tests (haematology (full blood count) and serum chemistry (liver function test, UEC, lipids) will generally be available at the lab within an hour or so, though the doctor will get them next day. Other tests, like urine test, feaces and swabs, take a couple of days for a culture to grow. More obsure tests that may need to be send to other labs in larger cities can take upwards of 21days!.....so, provided your mother just had a general checkup you have absolutely nothing at all to worry about! A thorough GP will always want to go over results!
