Blood Drug Testing

Blood Type Question? [Please help!]?

In the maternity ward, Mrs. Bright and Mrs. Light shared a room. When they were ready to go home, Mrs. Bright insisted that she had been given the wrong baby. The babies looked much alike, and unofrtunately, no one could find a record of the babies' footpritns. Hospital officials told Mrs. Bright she was mistaken and sent her and the baby home. Mrs. Bright eventually asked the hopspital to perform identification tests. The blood type tests showed tthe following Date. Mrs. Bright = Typpe AB Mr. Bright = Type O Baby at Bright's House = Type O Mrs. Light = Type A Mr. Light = Type A Baby at Light's House - Type A QUESTION: * Was there a mixup of babes at the hospital? Explain

  1. Usually the baby has the same blood type as the father. There is no way an O can make an A.
  2. Yes, there was a mix up. O is recessive. Since Mrs. Bright was type AB and Mr. Bright was O the baby would have to be either type A or type B since the baby will get an allele from each parent. The mother would give an A or B and the father would give an O (since O is recessive he would be OO making him type O)
  3. Morgan has got it right. Jennifer has not, there is no more chance of the baby having the father's blood type than the mother's. A type O parent can have a type A baby if the other parent is either A or AB. The baby at the Bright's house cannot be the child of Mrs Bright. She would pass on either A or B to her child, these are dominant over O so the baby would be either A or B if the father is O. The mix up could have been with the Light's baby, but it is also possible that the Light's baby is their own, and the Bright's baby got mixed up with another couple. As Mrs and Mrs Light are both A and so is their baby, it is not clear that it is their baby the Bright's got mixed up with. Their own baby would have a 25% chance of being O if they both carry the O gene, but they are most likely to produce group A children.
