Blood Drug Testing

Can a doctor drug test a minor during a normal urine test for a physical and notify parents of a positive?

My system is currently not clean (marijuana) but my doctor wanted me to provide a urine sample at a physical I just had. My parents are very suspicious of drug use. If they requested the doctor to test for drugs, would he be able to tell my parents, despite doctor/patient confidentiality, given that I am a minor? I ask this mainly because I used to see a psychologist and I learned through a slip-up that he had been telling my dad everything I told him. None of the info was life threatening. I live in California. I am 17 with less than 3 weeks until my 18th birthday, and already have arranged to obtain a LEGAL doctor's recommendation for medical marijuana for migraines I've had since age 4. My parents just watch too much tv and are the DEA's drones. YES, I know smoking is dangerous. YES, I know all of marijuana's negative side-effects. Thing is, I've been on 7 or 8 medications for migraines and THEIR chronic use has caused me to have heart problems. Please, I don't need a lecture.

  1. Until your 18th birthday, yes, your parents can ask the doctor to do this.
  2. Yes, you are a minor. The results of the test are available to your parents on their request.
  3. ok, I personally know a person who smokes quite a bit and is required to get the pee test every month. She has scored clean for the last 7 years. According to her, it's pretty easy to pass with these following conditions. Don't smoke every day. Smoke less than a joint a day (the more you smoke, the more you need. If you limit yourself to being the one-hit-wonder, you will need less to obtain results). Don't smoke for a week before you go in. From what she told me, they are only trying to weed out (no pun intended) the really heavy, addicted users. You know who these people are, their pot use really does affect their abilities and is a real problem. So unless you fall into that category of heavy user, you probably won't get busted anyway. (I would be interested in hearing the results for general knowlege, so if you could, please e-mail me when you get your test back) And for future reference, you may also want to try one of the 'purges' on the market. My friends swear by it. Good luck with your migranes, I know they are terrible.
