- There are different blood tests, the doctor does, to determine a liver problem: 1) The liver enzymes will show if the liver cells have become damaged. The cells of the liver makes these enzymes and, when damage, they can leak out. These are the ALT, AST, GGT, ALP tests. 2) The liver functions tests will show how well the cells of the liver are able to do some of the 500 plus functions the liver does to keep the body well. These tests are the Bilirubin, INR, Albumin, Pt, PTT. 3) The liver viral tests will show if a virus has entered the body and is using the liver cells to replicate itself. (Commonly known as Hepatitis A,B,C,etc) 4) The liver cancer tests known as alpha feto protein. 5) The ANA (antinuclear antibodies) to see if it is an auto immune disease And a few others. To learn about any of these tests: http://www.labtestsonline.org ...................................................... There are many causes of the liver cells becoming damaged: alcohol consumption, medication toxification, chemical exposure, mushroom poisoning, viral infections, parasite infections, biliary obstruction/malformation/infections, hereditary diseases where the body holds onto too much iron or copper, auto immune disease, cardiac/vascular problems, tumors/growth/cysts/cancer, fatty liver disease and other things. It depends on what tests was done, what the signification of the 179 means. Each tests has what they call a normal range to be in. This result has to be compared to what is normal. Also, The ALT test is more specific to the liver than any of there other liver enzymes... because the ALT is made mostly by the liver...the other enzymes aren't. Wish I could be of more help with this. You can always ask for a copy of your lab work report either from the doctor or the lab you have the test done at. If you find out which test has this result...you could then look it up at the site I gave you. Blood tests are only a hint of something being wrong. If the cells of the liver are damaged, the immune system of the body responds to this damage and will cause inflammation inside the liver which will cause the liver to enlarge in size. (this can be seen on an ultrasound or ct scan). Hope things turn out well for you. Best wishes
