  1. Fatty liver is caused by: alcohol consumption, certain medications, diabetes, weight gain, high cholesterol/triglyceride level, obesity, fast weight loss, chemical exposure, and others. There is really no one blood test that helps determine a fatty liver. They can see your cholesterol/triglyceride levels and may determine if you are diabetic, though. The general blood tests done for any liver disease is the 1) liver enzymes (ALT,AST,GGT,ALK Phos) which gives the doctor an idea if the liver cells are damaged. 2) liver functiongs (Bilirubin, INR, Albumin, Pt, PTT) which gives the doctor an idea how well the cells of the liver are able to do the functions, the liver does as a whole, to keep the body well 3) liver viral tests to see if the body has a virus that is using the liver cells to replicate itself. (like Hep A,B,C,etc) To look up any of these tests, here is a link: http://www/labtestsonline.org Here are some links to learn more about a fatty liver: http://yourtotalhealth.ivillage.com/fatty-liver.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatty_liver http://www.gastro.com/Gastro/liverdisease/fatty_liver.aspx http://www.medicinenet.com/fatty_liver/article.htm http://www.liverdoctor.com/index.php?page=fatty-liver An ultrasound or Ct scan is usually done to see this fatty liver. A liver biopsy is the best test to determine a fatty liver and all to see how far advanced it is. Best wishes
