Blood Drug Testing

What is checked in the average blood test/lab work?

I thought it was my medicine making me sick so today I asked my psychiatrist and he told me he doesn't think it is because if it were, I would have been sick since day one of taking them instead of just the past 3 weeks. He agreed with the nurse to do lab work on me which I am assuming is drawing blood and testing it. What can they learn from blood work though? Can it check for liver problems? I'd like for it too since I am taking medication and know the liver has a possibility of being affected by them.
