Blood Drug Testing

Is it possible to be pregnant with negative blood tests 4 weeks after a missed period?

My lmp was on Nov 17th, the only time I've had sex between then and now was the first weekend in December while I was visiting my fiance. We weren't using protection because A) I've always been told by my doctors that I would have a very hard time conceiving due to my unusually high androgen levels and altogether wonky internal chemistry, and B) even if I were to become pregnant the likelihood of it being anything other than a chemical pregnancy would be close to nothing. In fact, this has happened to me twice since I was 18, both times within the first two weeks of my missed period, but with the full shebang of symptoms like nausea, fatigue, breast tenderness, and an insanely increased sense of smell for those two weeks until a day or two after the miscarriage. So when my next period didn't start on the 12th like it was supposed to and the Chinese food place in the mall sent me running for a trash can I figured the same thing would probably happen again and didn't bother testing until my third week with no AF. I took two HPTs which both came back negative, then went a clinic and got another done a week later, still negative, and then a few days ago went to Planned Parenthood and got blood testing done, the results of which came back today, you guessed it, negative. Now I normally run pretty regularly these days (give or take a day or two) on the same cycle as my best friend who takes the pill and runs like absolute clockwork because of it. She started her period yesterday which means I should have too and I have not, and that makes this my second missed period if mother nature doesn't rear her ugly head soon. Except for a very stressful year when I was 19 I have not gone this long without a period since I first joined the ranks of womanhood and my periods hadn't regulated themselves yet, though if I'm not around a stable cycle like my friend's I may miss a week here or there every now and then as I sync up to whoever is around me most. I have been perfectly synced with my friend/housemate since April and I am not under any stress now, have not made any changes to my exercise or diet or daily routine in nearly 9 months, have not lost a large amount of weight very quickly, do not take drugs or any harmful medications (because I have strange reactions to synthesized chemicals of any sort), or any other of the numerous things that can cause a period or two to be missed EXCEPT have unprotected sex during a fertile time in my cycle. I'm also fairly certain I was ovulating that weekend because my pre-existing conditions require me to be very in-tune with my body to prevent the syncope episodes I suffer from and while they were not as pronounced as they usually are for me I did not experience anything like them in full force before or after that weekend. My breasts are sore and swelling, I am tired and dizzy all day long but can't seem to fall asleep, I throw up more food than I keep in my stomach most days (and the foods I crave and DO keep down are extremely unusual for me, we're talking foods I've hated my whole life here, and things like curry latkes with maple syrup), my body temperature has been a little higher than average for me, my mood has been all over the place and scaring the life out of my friends because I have trained myself to stay calm and rational throughout just about anything to help prevent my syncope episodes, and I can tell you with absolute certainty that three or four houses down someone is making fried chicken with too much oregano in the breading just from the faint scent that is coming through my barely cracked window. I understand that blood tests are supposed to be pretty definitive, but is it even possible that it could be a false negative this late even if it is just another chemical pregnancy or a miscarriage waiting to happen due to low HCG levels? I don't honestly expect any different from any pregnancy I may have, but it would be good to know all the same. I should also mention that both my mother (2 live births and 3 miscarriages), my aunts (1 live each, many miscarriages between them) and my grandmother (4 live and 2 miscarriages) have told me that they tested negative throughout all of their pregnancies, so I know I carry that particular strange and rare trait for HCG that doesn't bind well in addition to having genetic fertility issues, but I don't know if that includes blood testing or not. Any advice or information anyone can give me is very much appreciated. One other thing, I am sans medical insurance and a full time professional student so I don't exactly have an OB I can go to for more testing and probably couldn't afford to pay for a visit out of pocket in any case. If that's my only option though I will find a way to do so.

  1. I know for all my past pregnancy all my labs and home pregnancy test were negative, why don't you make an appt for an ultrasound and see what they say?
  2. Its a possibility youre pregnant, but hcg levels should show up in blood 4 weeks after conception. if you still have problems after a few more weeks tell your doctor you want an ultrasound. thats the only definate way of knowing theres a baby in there
