Blood Drug Testing

The vet wants more blood tests on my 12 yr old lab after being on phenobarbytol for 2 mths. Is this normal?

She is on pheno for seizures which I've been told is more than likely due to a brain tumor. Her initial blood work came back ok.

  1. They check the blood sample 2 months after starting to ensure the phenobarb level is within normal range. After that, the bloodwork will probably be checked on a yearly basis.
  2. this is normal
  3. Yes, this is normal practice. Your Vet wants to make sure that your lab is getting sufficient amount of phenobarb to control her seizure activity and to make sure she isn't getting too much. Too much phenobarb can make her lethargic and possibly cause her to have liver damage. Too little will not control her seizures properly. Good Luck with your Lab. She is lucky to have you.
