Pregnancy blood tests in UK?
the nurse at my gp practice has told me that they do not conduct blood pregnancy tests at my surgery. do any of you know why blood pregnancy tests are common in US for example and not in UK? sorry, i meant blood tests to detect if you are pregnant or not. it's just that i've read so many messages on here about blood pregnancy tests being more accurate than the hpt ones.

- They should do!!! Im a midwife in the UK and my gp/hospital screens everyone when they first book for Iron levels, blood group, HIV, syphillis, Hep B, Sickle Cell, Thalisemia and Plasma Glucose - the nurse must be wrong - please check with your midwife. We also do a downs screening blood test between 10-13 weeks (to tell of the risk of down syndrome but not all areas do this yet). Whoops sorry just read your additional details - well it just boils down to money and many Drs believe if a pregnancy test states your pregnant then you are!
- I've noticed that too not sure why but i know if you ask the midwife for a blood test she will send you off to the hospital for the blood work...
- I'm in the UK too. It's probably because the NHS doesn't have enough funds to perform routine blood pregnancy tests for everyone who needs it. I take it you mean tests to check if you're pregnant, not blood tests WHEN pregnant eg for HIV, hepatitis, blood group etc?!
