Blood Drug Testing

HELP!! Pet vet question!!!?

My grandpa has stage 1 Alzheimer's, so he is very forgetful. While my family was on vacation, he forget where his vet was and went to a different one because his dog was shaking and he was scared. They charged him $432!!!!! They had him get tons of food (unecessary), like 4 different medications, etc... The dog was given a vaccine for Parvo Vorus, Corona Virus, Rabies (which she has ALREADY HAD!), Feline Leukemia (she is a DOG), Chlamydia Vaccine, Feline Distemper. Also, Blood Count and Blood Chemistry tests. I think they just scammed my grandpa. It's not like she was vomiting blood or something. She was shaking!!! And it was during a storm, so my grandpa forgets that she gets scared. A vet should KNOW these things, yet, they charged him $432 for something as little as shaking. This seems pretty fishy to me...what do you think I should do??? For you people who are criticising my family for going on vacation, shame on you. We have been caring for my grandpa 24/7 for years while his other 2 daughters do not help AT ALL. My dad has been so stressed out, the doctors TOLD him to go on vacation. We called my grandpa multiple times a day and checked in. He just so happened to go to the vet w/o calling us and letting us know, so we had no idea. As far as his driving, he is a great driver. He just gets lost easily, so we bought him a GPS tracking system so it tells him how to get home. The problem is getting where he needs to go. We asked him not to leave the city, though, so he doesn't travel far distances. So he is DEFINITELY cared for well by our family. In fact, he lives 2 minutes away from us. But we all have jobs and we can't be with him every minute of every day. We are looking in to a live-in nurse...that would help a lot. But for now, we have to make do with what he have....

  1. I would confront the vet....this does not seem right. - Most vets I have been to take the time to make a few quick calls to all the vets around for the elderly. Sorry
  2. You could question the vet but seeing as your Grandfather was an adult than he had ever right to say no. Being that he was not in full control means nothing. The vet did take advantage but they did not know this. You should bring these tests to his normal vet and show them to him. Maybe his vet can do something your not able to do. It's a sad situation. You have no idea what your Grandfather agreed to have done on his dog so I don't see much that can be done..
  3. I think you need to take all the food and whatever else (feline vaccines???) you do not need, march down to this "vet's" office and DEMAND a refund. How dare they take advantage of a poor old man!
  4. Wow that is pretty ridiculous! You can try to sure them for malpractice, which I would greatly look into. Here are some websites about it and what you can do. http://www.animallaw.info/topics/spusvetmalpractice.htm http://judymyers.tripod.com/tfaq.html http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A45754-2004Sep23.html

  6. The vet did not know your Grandpa has Alzheimer's. They will not vaccinate, etc., without approval from the pet's owner (your grandfather) The vet did not know your grandfather is forgetful. And because your grandfather is forgetful, you don't know for sure whether or not he authorized the vet to do the bloodwork, etc. Do you have the receipt where the vet gave the dog feline vaccines? If so, take it to the vet and get a refund. Or call the vet and ask them if and why the dog was given feline vaccines. In the meantime, get a tag made for your dog that includes the name, phone number of the dog's vet. This way, any vet can contact your dog's vet, who will let them know the dog is current on shots, etc., and has a tendency to shaking when nervous This might be an indicator that someone else should be with your grandfather at all times. There's also the possibility he should not be driving a car -- especially during a storm.
  7. Demand a refund! Sue them. Also see if there is an agency that handles such things and file a complaint. It is absolutely cruel what they did to the animal - not just your grandfather. There are way too many vets like this too. I have always thought that there should be more oversight of vets. So many are corrupt...giving unnecessary vaccinations.
  8. contact a lawyer. there is no reason for them to be charging a person for feline care when they have a dog. contact his normal vet and ask if the dog is going to have any side effects from cat vaccines. we have a senior abuse phone number in our phone book, under the state government, maybe they need to know this. call a local news station and see if they are interested in airing this story. we have the problem solvers on a channel that airs bad business owners and helps people get their money back. this is a prime example that some vets are in it just for the money and they don't care about the treatment of animals
  9. thats what they do to old people
  10. Your parent should know better to not let your grandpa stay home by himself. Since the vet did not know if the dog have any vaccines done, and with your grandpa's consent, he is in the legal side. But gave feline vaccine, is way out of line. Do you have the invoice from the vet to indicate the feline shots. You can file complain for the feline shot. I do think the vet was taking advantage of your grandpa, but other than the feline shot, there is nothing you can do except file complain.
  11. The vet probably didn't know the dog was cared for by another vet in the recent past, so they gave the vaccines she already had with good intentions. But confront the vet about the feline ones, although they'll probably say it was a misprint on the bill?? And the dog food bags sound fishy, unless she was diagnosed with a specific condition and needed prescription food.
