Blood test: Can it detect cancer without further testing?
My fiance has had a lot of symptoms lately that have kept her doctors baffled to this point. She's been to several specialists, but she's not getting any "real" answers about what the possiblities are. After her recent bloodwork, her doctor simply said "your bloodwork came back fine". Does this alone mean she doesn't have cancer?? Would a blood test be able to show if you DO have cancer? The problems she's had range from abdominal pain and menstrual bleeding, to blood and mucous in her stool. Most recently, even eating causes her abdominal pain-- mostly on her left side, and lower abdomen, though it she's also sensitive just below her ribcage. She's 26 years old.

- blood tests will only show up certian cancers, what sort of cancer does she think she has?
- No, blood tests will not show up all cancers, simply for the fact that not all cancers live in your blood (DUH!). I would recommend that she get some type of MRI to scan her for tumors or other cancerous growths ASAP!
- Blood test for a specific protien; My mom was having hand pain; she went to a arthritis DR. they did blood test & she had a certin protien thats a cancer signal.. hope this helps, take care :))
- There is a blood test called CA 125 to detect if you have cancer. If the numbers are below 32, that means you are cancer free. Anything over that number means there is cancer. Ask her doctor if this particular test was done and if so, what was the number. If the number is less than 32 and the doctors could not do anything for her, I suggest you go see a holistic practitioner specifically someone who practices applied kinesiology.
- A blood test (full blood exam) can show blood cancers (leukaemia), dont believe it would show other cancers. But saying that there are certain white cells in the blood that fight cancers, so one would think they may have higher white count. Think you would need to have scans or ultrasounds to check out whats going on along with blood tests.
- Blood tests are not an accurate test for cancer.
- It's not likely to be cancer at her age. I would lean more towards the idea that it could be diverticulitis, which is a type of inflamatory bowel disorder. Also, depending on the amount of blood, it could be irritable bowel syndrome, and anxiety only exacerbates symptoms. She needs to demand a colonoscopy. Bloodwork alone will not tell someone if they have cancer unless it has metastisazed to other parts of the body. Even then, it will show up as an elevated amount of white blood cells in her CBC.
- Not sure. - yes, but they do further testing, to make sure.
