  1. they test your blood to see if there is anything wrong with the liver. The liver helps clean out certain chemicals from your blood, which is why alchahol kills your liver, because it over works and poisens it. I don't know what a good score is tho...
  2. w/out knowing which part of the test, that # is hard to say. are you sure it wasn't 3.9 or 4.9? that is common # for protein levels. the blood test itself is a common test that tells your doctors if there is a reason to be concerned (that your liver is not functioning properly). if you were tested 2 years ago and they didn't say anything, you should be ok, unless you are having problems. the liver isn't something to mess around w/though. there are no cures for most liver diseases and the longer it progresses, the less likely you can recover.
  3. There's more than one liver function test and you haven't said which this is so I am unable to comment on your results.
  4. enzymes are measured...about 5 of them.. this result can be for any of them, which looks normal anyways avoid alcohol
  5. You need to specify what that number was associated with... ALT (SGPT) - normal range 7 - 56 units per liter AST (SGOT) - normal range 5 - 40 units per liter Bilirubin GGT LDH If your enzymes are high then that ususally means that some of your liver cells are abnomally dying. If high, they will then proceed to check other things. See link for other normal ranges...
  6. There are three different types of tests that the doctors do to see how the liver is. (1)the liver enzymes: this is the Alt and the Ast and the Alkaline phosphatase..These will show if there is damage to the liver and/or biliary area. These can also be elevated in someone who exercise alot. (2) The liver functions tests: These test are known as the Bilirubin, INR, and Albumin. The liver performs many functions..approx 500 of them. These tests show how the liver handles the functions of removing toxins, making proteins, and making clotting factors to help us stop bleeding and heal well. The liver does so much to keep the body functioning well... it helps us metabolized our foods, helps us remove toxins from the body, it stores vitamins we need, it changes medications and breaks it down into a form that the body can handle, it makes proteins to transport other substances in our body. When you study all the liver does, it is truly amazing all the functions it does do. (3) Virus/bacterial testing to see if someone has developed viral or bacterial hepatitis. Some of which are known as Hep A,B,C, etc. When you look at your blood work. take note that there also is a place where they mark what is in normal range. Usually, they mark the name of the test first, then the normal range and then your results. If your number is located anywhere between the first and last number mentions.. then there is nothing wrong. No test is 100% accurate...it takes a series of them to be sure of the results. People can have slightly higher than normal and lower than normal and still be considered okay. You don't mention which test cover these numbers, but if you do find out...here is a site where you can go to and it will tell you why the test is done, what it is done for, and what may be the problem if it is higher or lower than normal range. http://www.labtestsonline.org Usually, when the liver has problems, it starts out with inflammation inside the liver. This causes the liver to start to swell or enlarge. This can be treated and the liver can heal. However, if the inflammation is not treated, it can lead to the cells of the liver dying and then the problem is much worse...cause then the liver isn't able to do the functions it once did sufficiently and the body suffers and the liver can go into failure. If you had any kind of elevations, it is best to have simple blood tests done again to be sure of the results. I hope this is of some help to you.
