Elevated Liver Blood test (Bilirubin, Ast, and total protein), should I be concerned?
I just got back my blood work up on my liver. My AST is 59 (10-45 is normal), my Total protein is 5.9 (6.0-8.0 is normal) and Bilirubin 1.7 (<1.2 is normal). Should I be concerned about this, does anyone have any ideas as to why all of these would be elevated? Thanks. (I do not drink or smoke), it is thought that i might have a metabolic problem such as a mitochonidral diease. Anyone heard of such problems with my results?

- I would check with the doctor. Are you taking any medications? There are certain meds (especially for treating high cholesterol) that can affect the liver.
- Get tested for hepatitis C. Many people have it and are asymptomatic until the liver becomes severely damaged, often after years or decades after intial infection. Hep c (HCV) typically causes these results. Of course there are other factors which can affect your liver enzymes, bilirubin, etc. Get tested for HCV, then your doctor can at least rule that out. Best wishes.
