Blood Drug Testing

Will THC show up in Thyroid Blood Test for Wellbutrin?

I'm 17 and I'm going to the doctor tomorrow to receive a thyroid blood test for wellbutrin with my father and i was wondering if THC will show up in the blood test or not. I'm not sure how these testings work and whether or not they'd even inform my dad about the THC, but I have no idea. Thanks for the help.

  1. No, not for that specific test. THC is another specific test. Just as you wouldn't look for oil while testing the level of antifreeze in your radiator, they don't look for other stuff in a specific test for the level of a drug. They can use the same blood sample to do both tests, so why not ask them to do that? They can't tell your Dad anything about the results of your tests unless you permit it up front. It's called the HIPPA act and is illegal for them to give test results (and a dozen other things) to anyone but you alone.
  2. Usually a thyroid blood test reports on Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), the amount of T3 and T4 (hormones) in your blood. Tests can also include results on antibody numbers. Welbutrin is an antidepresentant. The doctor may be interested in the levels of your wellbutrin but I've never heard of them using a thyroid test for it. Maybe he has written up a test specifically for that as well as once for the thyroid function test. Either way THC is not reported on unless the test is specifically targeted for those levels.
  3. Do you mean TSH? If you are specifically targetting a thyroid test then that is targeting the TSH. You can request that they also look at your THC levels but they usually dont do that unless your TSH levels are normal and they still suspect something wrong with the thyroid. However, I'm not sure why you are having this test for Wellbutrin. That is an antidepressant. If you have hypothyroidism you will need Synthroid or its equivalant. Hypothyroidism does tend to have depression as a side effect so that may be why you are on wellbutrin now, but once your thyroid levels are evened out then you probably wont be on it anymore. Still, a thyroid test will not tell you if you need more or less wellbutrin- there are no blood tests to tell you that. As for informing your dad- it will depend a bit. You are still a minor so chances are that he be able to get the information. Chances are though the doctors office wont make a special call to let him know the results after they inform you. However, if the results are given over the phone then they may give it to either you or your parent- depending on who answers. Most of HIPAA allows for parents to know about their childs medical records except in certain situations like pregnancy, alcohol, drugs, and if harm will come to the child. State laws differ. If you are on his insurance he will most likely find out about the test anyway. However, if privacy is a major concern for you about your thyroid then feel free to request that your doctor speak only to you about it. But thyroid disorders aren't a big deal- I encourage you to speak freely with your father about it if you can.
